St. Patrick’s Day Floral Design with Chris Norwood
After the winter we’ve been having, it’s nice to see green again. This week, Chris has an amazing St. Patrick’s Day floral design perfect for brightening your home and your spirit. For this arrangement, you’ll first need a small, thin green vase. Next you’ll need Bells of Ireland and gold wire (very festive for St. Patrick’s Day).
Begin by twisting the gold wire along the leafed portion of the stem. Do not wrap the wire along the entirety of the stem, because you’ll be trimming the bottoms. So be sure to leave extra wire at the top and the bottom. You’ll do this to six stems. Once they are each “wired”, take two each and begin entwining the extra wire at the bottom together so that the bases of the plants are stuck together. Now bend the tops of the plants toward each other into a heart shape. Bend the wire as needed to get the effect. Do likewise to the next two couple of plants.
Once you have three heart-shaped designs, combine them together at the base with gold wire so that they are arranged into a three-leaf clover. Cut off the stems and insert them into the vase. Now take moss and place it between your “clover” design and the vase. Take green-colored roses (which we have grown naturally) and add them. And last but not least, the daffodils. They are finally in bloom and give the perfect yellow accents to your green floral design.

Trashtastic Mardi Gras Centerpiece with Chris Norwood
Trashtastic? What in the world is trashtastic? And what does it have to do with Mardi Gras? Don’t worry, you won’t have to go dumpster diving for materials. This is a fun, festive, care-free Mardi Gras centerpiece that is still gorgeous, but it certainly goes for a more crazy personality than most decorative pieces we show you how to make. Which is only befitting for a holiday like Mardi Gras.
The purpose of this centerpiece is to mimic a Mardis Gras or Venetian mask, which are famous for their outlandish style. To get started, you’ll need a gold vase (it can be either tall or short). Place a collar of green dianthus around the rim of the vase’s mouth to hide the “mechanics” of your arrangement. Now take peacock feathers and insert them into the vase between the collar of dianthus. Make sure most of the stem shows for each feather, giving the impression that the feathers are fanning out of the vase.
Next, you’ll need two Mardis Gras masks (make sure they are green, purple and gold). Attach two short rods to the masks so that you can stick them in with the feathers on either side of the feather fan. Once the masks are in place, begin adding orchids to the arrangement, sticking them diagonally into the dianthus collar (we used orchids with dyed colors). Now add beads to hang around the masks and throw in a few purple irises to mix with the feathers. This should cover your purple and green, but don’t forget your gold. We suggest adding in gold lilies right beneath the masks.
When you’re happy with the arrangement, place a fleur de lis in the middle of the arrangement on a pole so that it “caps” off your design.

Mardi Gras Decorating Tips with Chris Norwood
It’s time to don your beads and bring out the king cake, it’s Mardi Gras season already. For home or office Mardi Gras decorating tips, here’s a quick, easy and flashy mesh wreath you can throw together in no time.
First start out by getting rolls of striped mesh in Mardi Gras colors: purple, green and gold. Take a metal wreath form and start entwining the mesh around the metal form in bunches, starting in the middle and working your way around. Next get a large Mardi Gras mask and place it in the middle of your wreath, tying the mask’s strings to the form to keep in place.
And of course, it’s not Mardi Gras without the beads. Grab some bead necklaces and start twist-tying them to the form so that they hang below the mask. Feel free to go as flashy as possible. - The official colors of Mardi Gras have meanings. Purple is for justice, gold is for power and green is for faith.

- The beads only date back a few decades to the 1970s when glass beads were thrown by the floats, but since demand got so high, glass beads were replaced by plastic beads.
- Mobile, Alabama is considered the first U.S. city to celebrate Mardi Gras. Today, it still has the second largest celebration after New Orleans.
- And a fun tip if you find yourself in New Orleans on Mardi Gras: if you miss a doubloon thrown from a float, don’t reach down to try and pick it up. Instead, put your foot down on it. If you reach down, you’ll probably miss it or get your fingers stepped on.

Untraditional Valentine’s Day Designs with Chris Norwood
When it comes to having great Valentine’s Day flair, nobody does it better than Tipton & Hurst.
If you’re looking to spice things up a little bit as far as Valentine’s Day designs go, our Vice President Chris Norwood has a few great floral arrangements up his sleeve you have to check out.
The first design includes a short red vase, a lobster claw head heliconia (to give it some tropical feel), metallic heart stems, monstera leaves, anthurium flowers (which already have great heart shapes), green moss carnations and circus roses. Put them together in the vase in any arrangement you think fits best.
The second design includes a red, skinny vase and plenty of gold flat wire. Wrap the flat wire around the vase, curling the excess into twisting designs for flair. Put branches of James Storie orchids into the vase. Now take the flat wire and make a heart shape with one end, giving you at least a foot of excess at the end before you cut it off. Take a gerbera daisy, stick the head through the heart shape of your wire and wrap the excess around the daisy’s stem. Do this to about four or five daisies, cutting the stems at differing links. Put them in along with the orchids and you have an exciting, untraditional Valentine’s Day floral arrangement.

Alternative Valentine’s Day Arrangement with Chris Norwood
Tired of the typical roses and tulips you set out every Valentine’s Day? Ready for a new Valentine’s Day arrangement with a unique or out-of-the-box flair? Fortunately, Chris Norwood has the perfect floral design that’s not just easy to make, it’s pretty impressive.
Instead of roses and tulips, give orchids a try. Specifically James Storie Orchids. They are smaller orchids with a deep red color that really pops. Take about eight branches of the orchids and then by a spool of red wire. Begin twisting the wire tightly around each individual orchid branches and be sure to leave excess wire at the top (around a foot of extra wire). Once each wire has been successfully wrapped, begin bunching them together and twisting more wire around each stalk, again leaving extra wire at the top. Each bundle should have around four branches. Here the wire can be wrapped loosely around the bunches. You don’t want to constrict the flowers too much.
Now get a short, red or clear-colored vase. Cross the ends of the bunches together and set them in the vase. This is where you begin forming a heart. Once the bunches are set into the vase, bend the tops of the bunches down toward each other, using the wiring to bend the stems without breaking them. Take the extra length of wire at each end and begin twisting them together. Make sure you are twisting the wire downwards toward the vase to keep the bunches bent toward each other.
Within minutes you should have something resembling a heart. Now take long grass blades and begin weaving them through the branches of the heart. This will add a nice green color and vary the texture. Wrap a bunch around the mouth of the vase to add support and cover the base.

Valentine’s Day Decor: Heart Wreath Designs with Chris Norwood
With most of winter at our backs, but still a ways to go until spring, you might be wondering, “What’s something fun, seasonal and special I can hang on my door?” You can’t do Christmas wreaths, it’s too early for a spring wreath, and a bare, naked door just won’t do. Fortunately, Valentine’s Day decor can fill up that void easily enough.
In anticipation of Valentine’s Day, Chris Norwood has a few ideas for creating easy, but stellar-looking heart wreaths you can hang on your door this time of year. There are several materials you can use, but Chris suggests using either pink wire or curly willow branches. They’re two very different styles, especially if you’re going for a fun, festive attitude or a rustic, down-to-earth design.
If you go with the pink wire, start by creating a single, wide circle of the wire (a sort of “lasso”). After four or five loops, cut off the wire and begin twisting one side of the circle. With the side that is still rounded, press it in the middle to create a heart shape. Make two of these with the wire, then interlock them by meshing together the layers of wire. If you go with the curly willow branches, you won’t need to twist the end to create the bottom tip of the heart. But you will need to lightly break the individual branches, forcing them into a uniform heart shape at the top. If you’re using curly willow, you won’t have to worry about the branches snapping off unless you peel away the bark.
Once you’re finished, be sure to hang them up where a whole lot of people can see. After all, even if it didn’t take you long, you still want your hard work recognized.

New Year’s Decoration with Chris Norwood
Happy New Year’s from Tipton & Hurst! We’ve got a few tips and tricks for taking down your Christmas decorations and adding a little flare to your New Year’s Eve, from our vice president and design mastermind, Chris Norwood.
When it comes to taking down your Christmas decorations, organization is key. You want to minimize the amount of headache for yourself when Christmas comes again this year. Instead of wadding up your Christmas lights into a tangled ball, take a slip of cardboard, make a short slit into the edge. Place the female end of your lights (the end without the plug) into the slit as a holder. Wrap the lights around the cardboard piece and fit the male end into the cut to keep the line from unraveling. As for garlands along banisters, instead of taking them all down at once and stuffing them into trash bags, take them down piece by piece. This way if the garlands are pre-lit and you have any that burn out, you can test them individually and take them apart easier. If you don’t want to take them down separately, you can hang them on clothes hangers in an unused closet for easy access.
For a great New Year’s decoration, add a little style to your champagne bottle. Take a length of silver or gold wire ribbon, anything that sparkles brightly, and wrap it around the neck of the bottle. Don’t tie it tight just yet. Where the ribbon makes the bow, begin inserting sparkling garland branches between the ribbon and the bottle. Once the garland is in place, tie the ribbon tight to hold it. Take more ribbon and begin wrapping it around the bottle neck, adding more garlands as you see fit. Once you are happy with the result, tighten the ribbons to make sure everything is held firmly.

Quick-and-Easy Christmas Centerpiece with Chris Norwood
Even though Christmas has already passed us, there’s nothing wrong with thinking ahead to next year, especially since our Christmas items are half off now. For next year’s Christmas centerpiece, Chris Norwood has a great arrangement that is easy to put together and takes very little time. For your Christmas centerpiece, grab a few glass bubble bowls and fill them water and a type of red berries, such as cranberries or holly berries. Place a small candle inside the bowl to float to add lighting. Before you set the bowls on your table, use garlands and sheets of bark (we recommend birch bark) as the runner down the table. Insert magnolia leaves, fresh apples and berry branches into garland to add different textures and colors. Use various styles of colored burlap, bunching them together into a bow and placing them near the center of your centerpiece.

Capital Hotel’s Christmas Tree Gets Noticed
Early this morning, Forbes Travel Guide released a blog post entitled “10 Luxury Hotels’ Dazzling Holiday Trees.” In the blog, Forbes Travel Guide lists their top picks for the best hotel Christmas trees from around the world. And Little Rock’s very own Capital Hotel made the list, right along the Plaza Hotel in New York City, the Bellagio in Las Vegas and Claridge’s in London, featuring the tree Tipton Hurst installed and decorated. The tree also got a mention in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, so be sure to pick up the Dec. 18th edition for a preview.

How To Make A Holiday Wreath With Chris Norwood
Looking to diverge from the classical evergreen holiday wreath? Chris Norwood showed KATV Channel 7 how to easily put together a metal, wire-form wreath using glass ornaments. The wire-form wreath provides a contemporary, European look. Take a few strings of beaded garland and zig-zag it through the wireframe, twisting it around the wires to keep it in place. When you use ornaments, insert a wire into the ornament instead of a hook so that you can twist the ornament onto the wireframe. Be careful to use ornaments with caps that are built in or glued on, a cap with a spring will pop right off. Arrange the ornaments in whatever order or pattern you like, but be sure to twist the ornament as close to the wire as you can to create tension and keep the ornament tied tight. You can also twist two ornaments together before attaching them to the wire form for a varied effect. Once you’ve finished adding ornaments, consider stringing lights through the wire form to really make your new wreath pop.

Tis the Season: We Bring Out Our Biggest Christmas Tree Yet
Tipton & Hurst recently made the front page of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, featuring a photo of the Capital Hotel’s Christmas tree. The Little Rock florist coordinated both the tree’s installation and its decoration, which took a team of more than 20 people. The tree is part of an annual collaboration between Tipton & Hurst and the Capital Hotel, one of Little Rock’s most historic and beautiful hotels. The tree stands at 28 feet (30 if you count the bow), making it the largest tree the hotel has installed yet, and the largest indoor living tree in Arkansas. With over a thousand ornaments, the Capital Hotel’s Christmas tree is a sight you simply cannot miss this holiday season.
